Refractory mortar, also called fire mud or seam material, is a monolithic material used as seam material for refractory masonry. According to the chemical composition, it can be divided into clay mortar, hihg alumina mortar, silica mortar and magnesia mortar.
What Is Refractory Mortar
Refractory mortar is made of refractory powder, binders and additives. Almost all refractory materials can be used to make refractory mortar. Normal mortar is made of refractory clinker with plastic clay as the binding agent and plasticizer. It has poor strength at room temperature, but its strength will be increased at high temperature due to the formation of ceramic bonding.
Chemical binding mortar is made with hydraulic, gas or thermosetting bonding materials as the binding agent. It is hardened below the formation temperature of ceramic binding due to some chemical reaction.

The particle size of refractory mortar can vary according to the requirements. Its ultimate particle size is generally less than 1mm and some are even less than 0.5mm.

The materials for mortar should be consistent with the refractory products. In addition to seam material, it can also be used as the protective coat of linings by coating or spraying.

The characteristics of mortar include:
(1) Good plasticity and easy construction;
(2) High adhesive strength and strong resistance to corrosion;
(3) High refractoriness up to 1650 ℃±50 ℃;
(4) Good slag Corrosion resistance;
(5) Good thermal spalling resistance.

Mortar is mainly used in the coke oven, glass furnace, hot stove of the blast furnace and other industrial furnaces.
