Application Of Silica Brick In The Crown Of Glass Furnaces

Silica brick is a type of cheap refractory brick with good creep resistance, low specific weight, low thermal conductivity and low pollution. It is widely used in the crown of glass furnace and can meet the requirement of the crown in common glass furnaces. 

The crown of the melting zone and cooling zone is usually operated at 1560-1590℃, sometimes up to 1600-1640℃. It is subjected to high temperature, load and erosion of the flame and alkali steam. Some parts may be damaged severely and hot repair is required. 

 

The refractory material used in the crown must have high refractoriness, good creep resistance and high softening temperature under load. Silica brick has all the above features. It has high softening temperature under load close to its refractoriness, it is stable at high temperature and has great strength. Since its main ingredient is SiO2 which is the main ingredient of glass, it almost does not pollute the glass liquid. Moreover it is cheap. Therefore, it is the preferred choice for glass manufacturers. 

 

However, silica brick is sensitive to alkali corrosion. In the oxygen-fuel furnaces, its service life is greatly reduced and becomes the weakest point of the furnace. Fused cast AZS and fused cast alumina block are used as alternatives to silica brick in the oxygen-fuel furnaces, but they are too expensive. Silica brick with better performance is under development.
